Wilander: “Carlos Alcaraz reminded me of Roger Federer”

Carlos Alcaraz will never forget this edition of the US Open, regardless of the outcome of his journey. The young Spanish promise took away the satisfaction of eliminating the number 3 ATP Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round, winning in the fifth set and demonstrating a maturity worthy of the great champions.

Juan Carlos Ferrero’s protege received extraordinary support from Arthur Ashe Stadium, also thanks to the controversy generated by his opponent during the tournament. Carlos also passed the litmus test, as he got rid of qualifier Gojowczyk in the round of 16 despite a slow start.

“Am I the youngest to reach the quarterfinals in New York in the Open Era? It’s a good thing, but if you don’t get important results, it doesn’t matter much. Each player has his own path and the accounts will be done in the end,” said Alcaraz, who will now face Felix Auger-Aliassime for a place in the semifinals.

Wilander: “Carlos Alcaraz reminded me of Roger Federer”

In a recent interview with L’Equipe, Mats Wilander admitted that he noticed a similarity between the Iberian and Roger Federer. Wilander said: “During the match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, Carlos Alcaraz reminded me of Roger Federer. At 6-4 in the fifth set tiebreak, he wanted to lob when he could have made a passer-by not too complicated.

He reminded me of what Roger Federer did during the 2005 Australian Open semi-final against Marat Safin. Both gave me the feeling that enjoying every moment of the game was more important than the pursuit of success.

Also, I like the fact that Alcaraz is always faithful to his tactical plan, he doesn’t improvise stupid things, on the contrary he is very intelligent in his choices. If his progression continues in this way, then I can assure you that there will be serious trouble for all his opponents.”

Federer is not present at the US Open this year either, having decided to have an operation on his right knee for the third time. The hope is that the 20-time Grand Slam champion can return to the field in 2022 and worthily end his immense career.
