Victoria Azarenka reveals how she became mentally strong

Former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka is known as a player strong mentally and she was asked to explain the reasons behind her mental strength. 

Azarenka, now ranked at No. 15 in the world, played at this week’s Montreal Masters, where she made the quarterfinal before losing to Aruna Sabalenka.

“Life experience have a tendency to shape your experience in a certain way. I always felt that I met challenges with my head high, learned from my mistakes, learned from other’s mistakes, keep moving forward,” Azarenka said, per Max Gao. 

“To be good at tennis, it’s great to lead a happy life, have a strong foundation where you can share your life experience. That for me is very important. I’m glad that I have been able to move in this direction and continue to learn.”

Naomi Osaka turned focus to athletes’ mental health 

A few months ago, Osaka said she would not be doing press conferences at the French Open due to her mental health wellbeing. 

After her first round win, Osaka refused to do a press conference and she received lots of criticism. 

Shortly after, Osaka pulled out of the rest of the French Open because she didn’t want to be a distraction. 

“I think now the best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris,” Osaka said in Paris. 

“I never wanted to be a distraction and I accept that my timing was not ideal and my message could have been clearer.

“More importantly I would never trivialise mental health or use the term lightly.

“The truth is that I have suffered long bouts of depression since the US Open in 2018 and I have had a really hard time coping with that.”
