US Senator hits out at Joe Biden over ‘absurd’ Novak Djokovic US Open ban

United States Senator Marsha Blackburn says it is “absurd” that Novak Djokovic can’t enter the United States because of his vaccination status.

Djokovic, 35, hasn’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 and he can’t enter the United States because foreigners entering the States have to show the proof of vaccination.

As it stands now, Djokovic is all but certain to miss out on this year’s US Open.

“It is absurd that Novak Djokovic is not allowed to enter the USA. No one should ever be punished for not being vaccinated, but the left has realised that if COVID is over, they will lose control over Americans’ lives. That’s why (Joe) Biden and (Anthony) Fauci are pushing for a foreover pandemic,” Senator Blackburn tweeted.

Djokovic likely to miss out on the US Open

Djokovic appears to be set to miss out on his second Grand Slam of the season.

Earlier this year, Djokovic was not allowed to compete at the Australian Open.

“I’m not going to go to America if I don’t have permission, so the Australian saga for me was not pleasant at all,” Djokovic said after Wimbledon.

On Wednesday, the US Open released their entry list and Djokovic’s name appeared.

The US Open released a statement, suggesting they won’t push for Djokovic to be granted a special exemption to compete at the tournament.

“Per the ITF Grand Slam rulebook, all eligible players are automatically entered into the men’s and women’s singles main-draw fields based on ranking 42 days prior to the first Monday of the event. The US Open does not have a vaccination mandate in place for players, but it will respect the US government’s position regarding travel into the country for unvaccinated non-US citizens,” the US Open said in a statement released.

Djokovic is a three-time US Open champion and last year he ended runner-up to Daniil Medvedev in the final.
