World No. 83 Thiago Monteiro showed love and respect for Gael Monfils following their clash at Adelaide 2.
Monteiro, a former world No. 74, made the Adelaide quarterfinal following a Monfils retirement.
Monteiro was 6-7 (2) 6-3 1-0 up when Monfils decided to retire the match.
“Always a pleasure do share the court with @Gael_Monfils, true legend and inspiration. Wishing a fast recovery and see you in Melbourne,” Monteiro tweeted after the match.
Monteiro clashed Monfils for the first time since 2018
Monfils routinely beat Monteiro at the 2017 French Open but the Brazilian got his revenge over the Frenchman in Quito a year later.
Monteiro broke Monfils in the opening game of the third set and the Frenchman retired the match in the middle of the second game.
Monfils enjoyed success in Adelade last week, winning his first ATP title since 2020.
“Last year was very tough for me. I almost, let’s not say want to quit, but lost my faith in tennis. But Elina (Svitolina) was there. Thank you Elina, thank you for everything,” Monfils said after beating Karen Khachanov in the final.
Monfils will now rest a bit and then play at the Australian Open.
After winning Adelaide, Monfils said his goal was to bring all the confidence to Melbourne Park.
“I’m doing better. I can’t remember which year (2019), but it was been great tennis. Unfortunately I haven’t played that good at the Australian Open. I lost to Fritz, but then I won Rotterdam, was playing very, very good tennis. It was great. I was in great shape. I know the thing is always to keep the momentum, keep all this confidence that you have. The goal is to keep all this confidence to bring into next week. Not starting tomorrow, but next week, to be ready to try to compete for the Australian Open,” Monfils said.
