The Match, the popular series of duels between golf stars and celebrities watered with jokes and large bets among the participants, will have a new edition on December 10 at the Pelican Golf Club in Florida (USA), according to Golf Digest. This time it will involve an award-winning quartet of PGA Tour stars: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. It will be played over 12 holes in the evening hours, with the course artificially lit, and will be broadcast by the Turner group (TNT, AT&T…).
The Match, schedule
It will be the second chapter this year, after the one starred in June by four NFL quarterbacks, the American football league, and the seventh in total. Tiger has appeared, counting on the next one, in three of them: November 2018 against Phil Mickelson, the great rival of his career and 2020 with Mickelson, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, two other star quarterbacks, the first already retired. Northern Ireland’s McIlroy and fellow Americans Thomas and Spieth will make their debut in the format.
Tiger reappeared this year after his serious car accident last year and played three tournaments: Masters, PGA and British. McIlroy is the defending FedEx Cup champion, Thomas is the PGA champion and Spieth has three majors under his belt. McIlroy and Tiger have been the voices of the players in the matchup against LIV, and have together launched TGL, a new mixed reality/virtual world team league in partnership with the PGA.
Woods is the son of Kultida Woods, a native of Thailand, and Earl Woods, a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. Woods has two half brothers and one half sister from Earl Woods’ 18-year marriage to Barbara Woods Gary. He was born in Cypress, California and grew up just north on the US West Coast in the greater Los Angeles area. His father gave him the nickname “Tiger” when he was born in honor of his friend Vuong Dang Phong, who had fought with him in the Vietnam War. Woods attended Western High School in Anaheim and studied economics at Stanford University for two years before becoming a professional golfer.
In 1996, together with his father, he founded the Tiger Woods Foundation, which takes care of the advancement and support of children and young people in the USA. From October 2004 to August 2010, Tiger Woods was married to former Swedish model Elin Nordegren. The couple has a daughter (* 2007) and a son (* 2009). Since the divorce on August 23, 2010, both parents have custody of the children. In mid-March 2013, Woods announced on his Facebook account that he was in a relationship with alpine skier Lindsey Vonn. On May 3, 2015, Vonn announced on her Facebook page that she and Woods had split.
