Sydney Tennis Classic: Paula Badosa, Anett Kontaveit, Ons Jabeur win openers

All but one of the seeds who played their first-round matches at the Sydney Tennis Classic on Monday advanced to the second round. The only seed to crash out in the first round was the eighth seed, Sofia Kenin.

Daria Kasatkina upset the American 6-4, 6-0 in 63 minutes to make it through to the round-of-16. Kasatkina saved all seven break points she faced while converting four of the five break points she had on Kenin’s serve. Next up for the Russian will either be French lucky loser, Fiona Ferro or Belgian Elise Mertens.

Fourth seed Anett Kontaveit began her 2022 campaign on a triumphant note as well. The Estonian defeated Shuai Zhang 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 29 minutes to reach the second round. Kontaveit will next play a qualifier in either Elena-Gabriela Ruse or Magdalena Frech.

Paula Badosa seeded fifth also took her place in the pre-quarter-finals. The Spaniard defeated Jelena Ostapenko 7-6(1), 6-1 in an hour and 21 minutes, coming from a break down in the first set. This is Badosa’s first win of the 2022 season after having lost in the first round of the Adelaide International 1 last week to Victoria Azarenka.

Sydney Tennis Classic: Ons Jabeur makes quick work of Astra Sharma

Speaking with the media after her win, Badosa said, “I knew it was a tough match but it’s good to start with tough matches at the beginning of the year. You have to get the rhythm fast, so I’m very happy about this win today. Mentally, it was tough at the beginning. When you lose first round like last week, it’s never easy even thought it was Vika and she played an amazing level… I was quite nervous today and for me, it was important. I think mentally, I stuck there until the last moment and I think the first set was key.”

Badosa will play either Ajla Tomljanovic or Slovakian qualifier, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Jaqueline Cristian defeated Australian wildcard Priscilla Hon in their first-round match. The Romanian won 7-6(5), 7-5 in an hour and 55 minutes. In the second round, Cristian will play third seed Barbora Krejcikova. The third-seeded Czech replaced world no. 1 and top seed Ashleigh Barty in the draw after the latter decided to withdraw from the event after winning the title in Adelaide last week.

Lastly, seventh seed Ons Jabeur reached the second round of the Sydney Tennis Classic. The Tunisian defeated wildcard Astra Sharma 6-3, 6-1. In the second round, Jabeur will play Petra Kvitova who came through a marathon against Arantxa Rus, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 in their first-round clash.
