Solheim Cup, the European team is complete

With the AIG Women’s Open, the fifth and last Major 2021 of women’s golf won at the photo finish in Scotland by the Swedish Anna Nordqvist (in her third Grand Slam title in her career), the qualifications for the Solheim Cup scheduled from 4 to 6 have closed September in Toledo (USA), Ohio.

Solheim Cup, preview

The Europe team is already complete with 6 players who qualified autonomously and 6 others nominated as wild cards by captain Catriona Matthew. While there is expectation for the three choices of Put Hurst, captain of the USA, which will be announced this afternoon.

The United States will be able to count on the sisters Korda, Nelly (world number 1 and gold medalist at the Tokyo Games) and Jessica. And again: on Danielle Kang, Ally Ewing, Austin Ernst, Lexi Thompson, Megan Khan, Lizette Salas and on the debutante Jennifer Kupcho. To complete the roster will be precisely the three choices of Hurst.

On the other hand, the European expedition is already complete. Double joy for Nordqvist who, after the Major triumph, took off the pass for the Solheim Cup (for her it will be the seventh appearance in this event) together with the German Sophia Popov (first time for the Teutonic), the Danish Emily Kristin Pedersen, to the Spanish Carlota Ciganda and the British Georgia Hall and Charley Hull.

The Irish Leona Maguire, Matilda Castren (first Finnish in history to play a Solheim Cup), the Danish Nanna Koerstz Madsen – all three making their debut -, the Swedish Madelene Sagstrom, the French Celine Boutier and the English Mel Reid. These are the choices of Matthew who has thus extinguished the rumors about the indiscretions that indicated Annika Sorenstam among the possible wild cards. In America, the Europe team will defend the cup they won in 2019 with a comeback, 14.5-13.5, in Gleneagles, Scotland.

Solheim Cup organizers and BMW announced the creation of the BMW Celebrity Match during the week of the 2021 Solheim Cup, which will take place at Inverness Club from August 31 – September 6 in Toledo, Ohio. The celebrity match will be held on Thursday, September 2 at 2 p.m. at Inverness Club, with celebrities and players battling for the inaugural crown.
