Sofia Kenin: “I go on one match at a time”

In the first round of the Roland Garros 2021, former Parisan Slam champion Jelena Ostapenko, was beaten in three sets 4-6 6-4 3-6 by defending finalist Sofia Kenin. The American reached the final last year, where she was defeated by Iga Swiatek.

Speaking at the press conference, Kenin talked about the match and the difficulties encountered so far in 2021. She said: “I don’t think how far I can go, I go one match at a time. That’s what I did in Australia last year. Taking small steps like winning the first round. it is about defending my title there but we are human: by winning a Grand Slam we cannot think that we will not have ups and downs, this is tennis.”

Marta Kostyuk, eighteen, is living a fairytale after a nightmare period. The young tennis player from Ukraine knocked out Garbine Mugurza in the first round 6-1 6-4, winner in Bois de Boulogne in 2016 against Serena Williams. After the semifinal in the WTA 250 in Istanbul and having passed the qualifiers in Rome, the first victory in the main draw of Roland Garros came for her, which also had to face COVID-19.

In the press conference Kostyuk said: “COVID? I didn’t have my lungs checked properly but I know it was very bad because I couldn’t breathe; at home I couldn’t even walk because I was out of breath. I could just stay in bed and try to get myself back on track. I believe that this year it is God who wants to make me stronger and stronger; I have had to face so many obstacles that not everyone is aware of it.”

We have ti recall that Petra Kvitova withdrew from the tournament due to an ankle injury accused ‘during my post-match press requirements’, or the obligations with the media not to participate in which Osaka has decided to end her Parisian adventure, while after winning the most important match of her life, Carla Suarez Navarro returned to the field in the day 3 of the Roland Garros 2021, almost two years after her last match.

The Spanish tennis player, despite the long absence, expressed an excellent level of play and came close to winning against Sloane Stephens, winner of the US Open in 2017.
