Former world No. 1 Simona Halep has confirmed that she is getting married next Wednesday.
Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion, is set to marry her boyfriend, billionaire businessman Toni Luruc.
“It’s a beautiful event. I am emotional,” Halep told Romanian broadcasts. “It’s an extremely important step. I’m happy it’s happening.”
The wedding ceremony will take place in Constanta.
Halep last played at the US Open, where she suffered a 6-3 6-3 loss to Elina Svitolina in the round-of-16.
“Yeah, nerves because I knew it was going to be a tough match,” Halep said. “I’ve been a little bit tired after three good matches here. But when you don’t have many matches, you always are a little bit stressed before the match. But overall I think I did a good job here and I’m looking forward with positive thoughts.”
Halep admitted she didn’t play on the level she needed to play
Halep paid the ultimate price for losing her serve twice in each set against Svitolina.
“Too many unforced errors from my side. I think I rushed,” Halep said. “I overhit sometimes. She was responding very well. Yeah, I think I rushed a little bit too much. Maybe if I would have let’s say a little bit more patience, I think would have been better.
“At this level you need to be a hundred percent with all aspects. That aspect [consistency] is a little bit struggling from my side, so that’s why I was not able to do a better match.”
After winning only six games against Svitolina, Halep showed her class and spoke positively of the Ukrainian.
“She played really well, very constant. Didn’t miss much, strong on the legs, running very well. All credit to her. She had a very good match. From my side, a bit tired, a bit stressed before. It’s normal. But it’s been a good tournament. I take the positives only.”
