Rothesay International: Garbine Muguruza, Yulia Putintseva book spots in pre-quarters

Garbine Muguruza advanced to the third round of the Rothesay International in Eastbourne on Monday. The fifth-seeded Spaniard needed an hour and 42 minutes to prevail 6-1, 7-6(7) against Magdalena Frech.

The former world no. 1 won 76% of her first-serve points to Frech’s 61% and 47% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 50%. Muguruza lost her serve once in the match but went on to make good of three break point chances on Frech’s serve.

Post-match, Muguruza said, “The conditions were hard today. I feel like I fought hard against the wind, and I haven’t played many matches on grass either. I could see today that if I didn’t fight as hard as I can, I wasn’t going to win.”
