Roger Federer had to come a long way in the past 18 months, enduring a severe knee injury and two surgeries before returning to court this March. Roger has played 13 matches at five tournaments this year, doing his best to get back at 100% by the grass season but suffering two heavy losses to Felix Auger-Aliassime and Hubert Hurkacz. After an early exit in Halle, Federer embraced his 22nd Wimbledon campaign and defeated Adrian Mannarino and Richard Gasquet in the opening two rounds to enter the last 32. The Swiss defeated Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 34 minutes to reach the last 16 at Wimbledon for the 18th time. An eight-time champion had a chance to seal the deal in straight sets, missing it but moving over the top in the fourth after a solid performance that sent him into the next round.
Roger Federer spoke about Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.
Roger played better on both the first and second serve, getting broken twice and securing four return games from 11 chances that carried him over the top and into the second week. Hitting with a better pace than in the previous two encounters in London, Roger had 48 winners and 33 unforced errors. At the same time, Norrie added 34 winners and 32 mistakes to his tally, giving his best but failing to match the opponent’s numbers. After the match, Roger said that he doesn’t play because of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic and everything they have achieved in the last couple of years. Instead, Roger mentioned that he is doing his own things, focusing on that troubled knee and trying to get back at his best.
“I don’t think I’m playing because Nadal and Djokovic are doing great things; I’m doing my own thing. I had problems of my own with the knee. That’s been the focus. Then again, it’s just very impressive to see what Novak has been doing this year. As you said, it’s going to be another big one for him in the following days. There’s always danger in the draw wherever you look. At the same time, Novak can have different ways how to win matches. He’s done incredibly well in Australia and again in Paris. That was exceptional, of course. He looks like the big favorite here going into whatever round he goes into. He deserves it; he’s worked extremely hard and has played great at the same time, too. Novak will be tough to beat,” Roger Federer said.
