In a long interview with GQ Magazine during his stay in Boston for the Laver Cup 2021, Roger Federer talked about numerous topics. Speaking of clothing and outfits, the 20-time Grand Slam champion brought up his friend and rival Rafael Nadal.
Federer said: “Now tennis players almost all dress the same way, there are no longer those marked differences in style that it was possible to admire in the past. As for me, I miss Rafael Nadal’s sleeveless tennis shirts. At the same time, we must consider that evolution is part of the business.”
The 40-year-old from Basel feels he still has something to give before retiring: “I was happy to play Wimbledon again this year, it was not at all obvious after what I had been through in 2020. I didn’t get there in ideal conditions, but at least I did. The defeat with Hurkacz hurt me a lot. If you don’t feel the disappointment when you lose, then it means that the time has come to say enough.”
Roger was at the Laver Cup 2021
Roger flew to Boston to witness the fourth edition of the Laver Cup live. Even without any of the Big 3s on the pitch, Team Europe managed to easily establish itself on Team World in the wonderful setting of the TD Garden of Boston.
The outcome of the contest has never been in question since the opening day, but there was no lack of spectacular sequences that thrilled the public. The former world number 1, who devised the Laver Cup format together with his agency ‘Team 8’, has just undergone surgery on his right knee for the third time in the last year and a half.
There is no precise program for his return to the tour, as his coach Ivan Ljubicic also admitted in a recent interview with the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero. The Swiss phenomenon played just 13 official matches in 2021, with a not-so-exciting tally of nine wins against four defeats.
