Pietrangeli: “Djokovic will never be great like Roger Federer”

Novak Djokovic did not appear in the best shape of him and did not express his usual level of play, but he nevertheless moved within three distances of the Grand Slam goal. The Serbian champion could sign the umpteenth feat of his career and overtake Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the number of Majors won for the first time.

On his way he met Matteo Berrettini, who both at the Roland Garros and Wimbledon has shown that he has the right weapons to worry him and put him in difficulty. Anyway, Djokovic, despite he lost first set, was able to beat Berrettini in four sets, to reach the semifinal of Flushing Meadows 2021.

In recent days, the debate concerning the GOAT issue has heated up more than ever and his personal opinion was expressed by Nicola Pietrangeli, who, a few days after his 88th birthday, gave a very interesting interview to Corriere della Sera.

Pietrangeli: “Djokovic will not overtake Federer”

An interview in which he replied without thinking for a second to the usual question: who is the best tennis player of all time? “No doubt: Roger Federer. The strongest he has ever challenged? Rod Laver. Even though Lew Hoad, on the one-off match, was formidable. Djokovic will not overtake Federer, even if he achieves the Grand Slam. Let’s say that he is a great who will never be the greatest.”

In one of his latest press conferences, Djokovic focused on the rivalry with Federer and Nadal. He said: “I think that the challenge between Roger and Rafa on the pitch half on the ground and half on the grass was a fantastic idea, who thought it was a genius! The truth, however, is that it is difficult to say who is better, we are all different and we have had different paths.

In some ways we are complementary, also because we have been more successful on different surfaces. In general, our rivalry has been very important for tennis, the more we talk about it, the more we talk about the GOAT issue, the better it is.”
