Novak Djokovic’s destiny is to overcome Roger Federer’s record

Novak Djokovic reached the semifinals of the Roland Garros 2021. Thanks to the success got in the 4th round against young Italian Lorenzo Musetti, Nole achieved the 31st victory of Novak Djokovic in the fifth set in the Grand Slams events, and in this way the Serbian champion has overtaken Roger Federer, stopping at 30 wins in the fifth set.

Nine tennis players have achieved at least 24 successes in the fifth set in the Open era and now Novak Djokovic is at the top of this particular ranking where, curiously, Rafael Nadal is not part of but there are other active tennis players like the Croatian Marin Cilic Japanese Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka.

Over the years Novak Djokovic has reached and surpassed Roger Federer in several extraordinary records, the last one was that of last March where the Serbian champion overtook Roger in the number of weeks at the top of the ATP rankings.

Novak Djokovic’s destiny is to overcome Roger Federer’s record

But the Serbian champion’s fate seems to be to surpass Roger Federer in many other records. Very likely Nole will easily surpass the 20 Majors of the Swiss Maestro. Although Djokovic is already 34 years old, thanks to his physique and his technical, physical and mental maturity and his great experience, he can put Roger’s 8 titles at Wimbledon at risk. Djokovic has won 5, and has already shown he can beat Federer without much trouble on the lawns of the All England Club.

Djokovic and Federer have faced each other 50 times, with the balance of 27-23 in favor of the Serbian. This rivalry is ranked, in terms of the number of matches played, as the second largest in the Open era after the one between Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Dokovic himself. It is also the largest in the history of Grand Slam tournaments, with 17 matches played and is regarded as one of the most important tennis rivalries of all time.

Yet there is perhaps one field in which Djokovic will never surpass Federer: popularity. Both, along with Rafa, are the three most popular tennis players of the last 20 years, but the fans of the Swiss are unmatched for anyone, perhaps, in the world of sport.

Nole went to great lengths to receive the same love that crowds have for Roger, and only partially succeeded. Lately, some behaviors of the Serbian, combined with the perfidious declarations of his parents towards Federer, especially his father Srdjan, Djokovic has perhaps lost forever the possibility of overcoming Roger even in this special record.
