Novak Djokovic: Without question, Carlos Alcaraz has been the best player in 2022

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic says Carlos Alcaraz is undoubtedly the best player in the world right now.

Alcaraz is having a great 2022 season as he is 28-3 on the year, with four titles collected.

Last week, Alcaraz defeated three top-5 players en route to winning Madrid.

Alcaraz beat Djokovic in the Madrid quarterfinal, before he defeated his idol Rafael Nadal in the semifinal.

In the Madrid final, Alcaraz ousted world No.3  Alexander Zverev 6-3 6-1.

“So far he’s the best player in the world, no question, this year with the results that he’s been doing,” Djokovic said, per Reem Abulleil.

Djokovic happy to see Alcaraz doing well

Alcaraz turned just 19 last week and many believe he has what it takes to be the new face of the men’s tennis.

I think it’s great to have somebody that young who is bold enough to challenge the best players in the world and win big trophies, but at the same time be humble and nice off the court. He brings a lot of energy on the court, which is nice to see,” Djokovic said, per Sasa Ozmo.

“I think it was a good decision from his part (not to play in Rome). Roland Garros, he’s definitely one of the main favorites, no doubt. He’s the talk of the sport.”

Djokovic didn’t win Madrid but he definitely played better than he did in Monte Carlo and Belgrade.

Djokovic feels his game is getting to the point where he wants it to be at the French Open.

This week, Djokovic is aiming to win his sixth Rome title.

Winning Rome would provide Djokovic a major boost of confidence ahead of his French Open title defence.

“I think that my game is closer to desired level every week. Felt physically hundred percent, even after almost three-and-a-half-hour battle against Alcaraz. I recovered well the next day, was ready to go. That’s a positive and encouraging factor,” Djokovic said.
