Like in almost every other segment, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are topping the list of players with the most Major semi-finals in the Open era. Proving the incredible consistency year after year, the great trio has played in 121 Major semi-finals since Wimbledon 2003 when Federer reached the last four for the first time, standing above their rivals and passing the previous leaders Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl. Federer leads the charts with 46 Major semi-finals, and Djokovic has reduced the deficit to just four following an incredible run at Majors in 2021 and 27 wins from 28 encounters! Dealing with a knee injury after the last year’s Australian Open, Roger has not been able to increase his tally in the past six Majors, allowing Novak to move closer to him and leave Rafael Nadal further in the third place.
Djokovic is on 42 Major semi-finals, advancing into at least one semi-final at Majors in 14 of the past 15 seasons and looking good to match Federer’s record in 2022 or 2023 if he maintains this pace. Rafael Nadal had a poor season at Majors for his high standards, failing to reach the final for the first time since 2016 and competing in only one semi-final at Roland Garros. Thus, Novak is now seven semi-finals in front of him, and it’s not realistic to see Rafa ahead of Novak in the rest of their careers, especially not if the Spaniard continues to deal with injuries.
Novak Djokovic has played in 42 Major semi-finals.
Djokovic’s 42nd Major semi-final came at the US Open, playing in all four during a single season for the first time since 2015 and remaining on Federer’s trail. Novak played for tennis glory and calendar Grand Slam in New York, competing for the first time since the Olympic Games setback. Djokovic did not play at his best at the US Open, losing the opening set against Kei Nishikori, Jenson Brooksby and Matteo Berrettini but recovering in time to beat them and reach his 42nd Major semi-final, the 12th in New York in the last 15 years! Novak toppled Alexander Zverev after five sets to advance into the final and move closer to tennis glory before losing the title clash to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, missing a great opportunity and staying on 20 Major crowns.
