Novak Djokovic hints he could skip rest of 2021 season

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has hinted that he could sit out the remainder of the 2021 season.

Djokovic, 34, failed to win a record 21st Grand Slam title and claim a Calendar Grand Slam.

Djokovic was on the verge of making tennis history on Sunday but Daniil Medvedev handed the Serb a 6-4 6-4 6-4 loss in the US Open final.

“Let me tell you – I have no plan, absolutely nothing,” Djokovic said. “I don’t know if I’m going to play anything, anywhere… I’m just here in New York right now.”

After the final, Djokovic admitted Medvedev was the better player.

“I think that I really tried to do everything in my power to prepare in the best possible way, to bring myself to the optimal state of body, mind, and spirit,” the Serb added. “I really don’t know what I would change, I really did my best… I simply played against a better player – who had more enthusiasm and energy.”

Djokovic admitted Medvedev executed his game plan perfectly

Medvedev suffered a disappointing straight-set loss to Djokovic in this year’s Australian Open final,

This time, Medvedev came out onto the court determined to avoid the same outcome.

“I mean, he was hitting his spots very well. He came out very determined on the court. You could feel that he was just at highest of his abilities in every shot. He had a lot of clarity what he needs to do tactically. He has executed it perfectly,” Djokovic said.

“The other hand, I was just below par with my game. My legs were not there. I was trying. I did my best. Yeah, I made a lot of unforced errors. I didn’t have — no serve really.

“I was below par with everything, to be honest. So just one of these days where unfortunately, yeah, wasn’t meant to be.”
