Nick Kyrgios won’t battle Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer at 2022 Laver Cup

Nick Kyrgios has announced that he won’t be competing at this year’s edition of the Laver Cup.

Kyrgios, 27, is set to miss the Laver Cup for the first time.

The Laver Cup held its inaugural edition in 2017 and Kyrgios was among participants that launched the event.

After four consecutive Laver Cup appearances, Kyrgios has decided to skip this year’s edition and instead return to Australia after the US Open and spend some quality time with his family and girlfriend.

The Laver Cup wasn’t held in 2020 because of the pandemic.

“No Laver Cup for me this year. Just letting you all know. Gotta have that home time with my family and beautiful girlfriend,” Kyrgios wrote on his Instagram Story.

Kyrgios set for Washington after winning it all in Atlanta

Last week, Kyrgios decided to pull out of the Atlanta singles event due to a knee injury.

But Kyrgios didn’t retire from the doubles event as he and his close friend Thanasi Kokkinakis won the Atlanta doubles title after beating Jason Kubler and John Peers in the final.

In 2016, Kyrgios won the Atlanta singles title.

Now, Kyrgios is the first player in tournament history with titles in singles and doubles events.

“Obviously Atlanta is a special place. Won the singles title here [in 2016] and now the doubles. Crowd’s amazing and it was a new experience playing two matches in one day as well for a title. Me and Kokky were pretty resilient and obviously no singles this week, but confidence is at an all-time high in doubles,” Kyrgios said after winning the Atlanta doubles title.

This week, Kyrgios is competing at the Citi Open in Washington.

On Monday, Kyrgios and his partner Jack Sock defeated Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer in their doubles opener.

In the Washington singles first round, Kyrgios plays Marcos Giron.

It remains to be seen what can Kyrgios do this week in Washington.
