Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios thinks Wimbledon is still one of the most prestigious tournaments of the world and added the participation of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams will bring the excitement.
In April, Wimbledon imposed player bans on Russian and Belarusian players.
The ATP responded in a strong way, removing ranking points from this year’s Wimbledon.
When asked about this year’s Wimbledon, Kyrgios suggested he thinks it will be a good edition as he is excited about seeing Williams back to action.
“It’s great. Humans always take athletes for granted, you know, Roger [Federer], Rafa [Nadal], Novak [Djokovic], Lebron [James], Serena [Williams], like these athletes are so rare, its amazing,” Kyrgios said. “As long as they want to keep playing we just need to keep taking it in and enjoying that because the time is nearly up for all these players. It is amazing to see her playing again and playing the biggest tournament in the world.”
Kyrgios looking forward to competing at Wimbledon
When the ATP imposed a harsh sanction on Wimbledon, there was a growing fear that top players would skip the tournament.
However, it seems that all top players, except banned Russian and Belarusian players, are set to play.
“I will add that I think this is a great example that every player should try to play Wimbledon, rather than not play for the points,” Kyrgios added. “Like, I think as a kid, you want to win Wimbledon, you want to play Wimbledon. Everyone that follows tennis knows what Wimbledon is, and people that even don’t follow tennis know what Wimbledon is. That’s a great example. Obviously, she is not worried about ranking, I understand. But everyone should be playing Wimbledon if they can.”
Earlier this year, Kyrgios became a Grand Slam champion after he and Thanasi Kokkinakis won the Australian Open men’s doubles title.
Now, Kyrgios is aiming to win his first Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon.
