There were three upsets on Tuesday at the National Bank Open. Fifth seed Garbine Muguruza, ninth seed Elise Mertens and 12th seed Elena Rybakina all crashed out in their respective opening-round matches.
Muguruza, who received a first-round bye, lost to Katerina Siniakova. The Czech 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 in a minute shy of the two-hour mark. In the round-of-16, Siniakova will play either Liudmila Samsonova or Sara Sorribes Tormo.
While Sorribes Tormo defeated Canadian wildcard Carol Zhao 6-2, 6-3, Samsonova caused the second upset of the day over Rybakina. The Russian won 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 against the Kazakh in two hours and eight minutes.
Camila Giorgi upset Mertens 6-4, 7-5 in their round-of-64 match The Italian needed an hour and 31 minutes to complete the win. In the second round, Giorgi will play Nadia Podoroska.
National Bank Open: Bianca Andreescu marks successful return
Bianca Andreescu was among the seeds who advanced to the next rounds. The second seed won her opening-round match against Britain’s Harriet Dart 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and two minutes. Andreescu’s the defending champion, having won the tournament in 2019. In 2020, the tournament had been cancelled on account of the pandemic.
Speaking about playing at home, following her win, Andreescu shared, “I had all the feels. It was super emotional at the end. I got goosebumps walking on the court. Having the crowd cheer so long, it’s just a crazy feeling. I’m so happy the tournament was able to be played. There’s always going to be pressure, but I really use it to my advantage, especially here at home. Having that crowd support really helps me. Win or lose, I know they’re always going to have my back, so that definitely relieves a lot of pressure.”
In the third round, Andreescu will play either 13th seed Ons Jabeur or Daria Kasatkina.
Eighth seed Victoria Azarenka also reached the third round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sorana Cirstea. The Belarusian will take on either 11th seed Maria Sakkari or Veronika Kudermetova next.
Seventh seed Petra Kvitova, 10th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and 15th seed Coco Gauff also won their respective openers. Kvitova defeated Fiona Ferro 6-4, 6-4 while Pavlyuchenkova defeated Ferro’s fellow Frenchwoman, Caroline Garcia 6-4, 6-4. Lastly, Gauff defeated Anastasia Sevastova 6-1, 6-4.
San Jose champion Danielle Collins extended her run of victories to 11 consecutive matches. The American won her first-round match at the National Bank Open against Jil Teichmann. After an hour and 57 minutes of play, Collins posted a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win.
