Mutua Madrid Open: Emma Raducanu, Elena Rybakina crash out
Meanwhile, Jil Teichmann downed another seed en route to making it to the quarters in the Spanish capital. The Swiss upset 16th seed Elena Rybakina 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 17 minutes in their pre-quarter-final meeting.
Teichmann won almost 79% of her first-serve points to the Kazakh’s 63% and 47% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 33%. She saved all six break points she faced while converting three break points on Rybakina’s serve.
In the quarters, Teichmann will take on Anhelina Kalinina. The Ukrainian scored an upset of her own in the third round against ninth seed, Emma Raducanu. Kalinina won 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and 19 minutes. The world no. 37 lost her serve four times but went on to break the 2021 US Open titlist’s serve five times to tilt the match in her favour.
After her win, Kalinina said, “Already in the end of the match, I was not thinking about the score, because the intensity was high. I’m just so happy that I could close the match, because it was crazy at the end, so many deciding points and so many rallies. Tough, tough match. I’m very happy that I’m starting to move further in the big tournaments… Now I can get into these tournaments, get my experience, play more matches here, and get another match, another opportunity. So, I’m getting more experience on this level, and these matches will give me very good experience in my pocket.”
The Mutua Madrid Open quarter-final between Teichmann and Kalinina will be their third meeting against each other, with both players having won one match each previously.
