Mouratoglou reveals key edge before US Open: “Simona Halep is a master in that”

Simona Halep’s current coach Patrick Mouratoglou revealed what is the key advantage of Simona Halep, an edge that may enable her to win the US Open this year.

“Movement is key in our sport. Movement is about the efficiency of footwork, but also about recognizing the quality of our shot and moving accordingly. The depth, the angle, the speed, the spin of each of our shots gives us a feel of the answer we can get from the opponent and our placement should take that into consideration. Simona Halep is a master in that,” Mouratoglou wrote.

Simona Halep withdraws from Cincinnati

Due to a right thigh injury, world No. 6 Simona Halep withdrew from her second round match against Veronika Kudermetova in Cincinnati.

On Monday, Halep defeated lucky loser Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Halep didn’t exactly arrive in Cincinnati fresh, having won six matches on her way to the Toronto title last week.

“You have been an incredible competitor all week and shown once again why you have such a relentless career. Once again, it is an honor for me to be by your side. This is our first title together and a big one. With 18 out of the Top 20 in the draw, it means a lot, and makes us hungry for more. Monday you will be back in the Top 10 in the world. A milestone. Cheers Simona Halep,” Mouratoglou wrote on Instagram after Simona Halep raised the trophy above her head in Toronto.

Halep won six matches in Toronto before playing a three-set match in Cincinnati. Playing so many matches in the last week has taken its toll on Halep, who has decided to withdraw from the rest of Cincinnati.

Nonetheless, Halep has had an excellent preparation for the US Open. Halep now has 10 days to rest before the US Open, and she won’t be lacking in confidence.
