Monfils: Choosing between Berrettini e Sinner is like picking between Federer e Nadal

Former world No. 6 Gael Monfils couldn’t name the better player between Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner as he explained that choosing between those two is like picking between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Monfils believes that Berrettini and Sinner are both great players and that’s the main reason why he found it tough to pick one of the two.

“Maybe we will prefer to face Jannik on hard and Matteo on clay, or better to play against Sinner on grass because he is less strong than Matteo on that surface  it is very difficult to answer you because it is a bit like asking you if you prefer to play Rafa or Roger… it depends where, when, how. However, at the end of the year, your boys will both be in the top 10, I’m sure of that,” Monfils told Ubitennis.

Monfils went on a rant about the French media

Last week, Monfils was the lone French player to make the Metz quarterfinal.

For the first time in tournament history, Metz only had one Frenchman in the quarterfinal.

When Monfils was asked about the stat, he went on a rant.

“We must stop with this thing of zero French late in the tournament. Were the guys who lost their matches favorites? I am not sure. I find it hard to point the finger at them. It’s hard enough to lose. Everyone is trying to win, we don’t lose on purpose. Yes, maybe we are performing not great this week. Yes, maybe it will be better next week. Yes, it was complicated in Grand Slams this year. But this is not an end. How many countries would dream of having as many players as us in the rankings? We’re a great tennis nation, even if it gets a little harder from time to time. We shouldn’t put ourselves too high when we play well, but we should not point the finger too much when we lose. It hurts and we hope that will change quickly. The period was complicated, but we will come back,” Monfils said in Metz.
