Melbourne Summer Set: Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep get going into the last-eight

Top seeds Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep were dominant in their respective second-round matches to reach the quarter-finals of the Melbourne Summer Set 1 on Thursday.

The no. 1 seed Osaka defeated Maryna Zanevska 6-1, 6-1 in just 58 minutes. Osaka faced no break points and converted five of the 12 break points she had on the Belgian’s serve. The former world no. 1 won 90% first-serve points to Zanevska’s 58%.

In the quarter-finals, Osaka will take on Andrea Petkovic. The German defeated Clara Burel 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and five minutes in their round-of-16 clash.

Meanwhile, the second-seeded Halep took 61 minutes to win the all-Romanian clash against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, 6-2, 6-1. Halep faced four break points – all of which came in the opening set – and was broken twice. In contrast, she broke Ruse seven times.

Speaking after her win, Halep said, “Very happy that I could win this match in this way. The beginning was a little bit different, so I didn’t feel the ball great, but slowly I started to feel the game, and I think I was dominating the match. I’m very happy with the way I played. I worked a lot in the off-season, so I feel ready to play matches. Actually, I missed playing official matches a lot, so here I am, and I try every time to give my best.”

In the quarters, Halep will clash against sixth seed Viktorija Golubic. The Swiss defeated Dutchwoman Leslie Pattinama Kerkhove 6-3, 6-0.

Ana Konjuh and Qinwen Zheng set up a quarter-final clash against each other. Konjuh beat Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 while the Chinese qualifier defeated Vera Zvonareva, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Lastly, third seed Veronika Kudermetova and Anastasia Potapova will play the last quarter-final at the Melbourne Summer Set 1. The Russian won against Madison Brengle 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 while Potapova won against Anna Bondar, 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-5.

Melbourne Summer Set 2: Sara Sorribes Tormo, Sorana Cirstea exit in 2R

Meanwhile, in the Melbourne Summer Set 2, fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo and fifth seed Sorana Cirstea crashed out in the second round. Kamilla Rakhimova ousted Sorribes Tormo 7-6(3), 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals while Amanda Anisimova won against Cirstea, 6-4, 6-1. In the quarters, Rakhimova will play seventh seed Ann Li. The American won her second-round clash against Anastasija Sevastova, 6-1, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Anisimova will take on Irina-Camelia Begu for a chance to reach the semi-finals.

Sixth seed Clara Tauson and Aliaksandra Sasnovich set up a quarter-final meeting against each other. The Dane won against Lin Zhu 6-1, 6-0 while Sasnovich beat Rebecca Peterson, 6-2, 6-4. Lastly, third seed Daria Kasatkina and Nuria Parrizas Diaz will play for a semi-final berth at the Melbourne Summer Set 2. Kasatkina beat Madison Keys, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3 while the Spaniard defeated Claire Liu 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 in their respective second-round matches.
