Marin Cilic was straight honest after Croatia’s Davis Cup victory over Spain as he admitted that the outcome could have been much different had Rafael Nadal played the tie.
On Wednesday, Croatia defeated Spain 2-0 to advance to the semifinal at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga.
After Borna Coric defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in the first match of the tie, Cilic edged out Pablo Carreno Busta 5-7 6-3 7-6 (5) to secure the victory for Croatia.
Unfortunately for Spain, they were without their best two players – Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.
Recently, Nadal revealed that at the start of this season he informed Spanish captain Sergi Bruguera that he likely would not be available this year.
On the other side, Alcaraz recently picked up an abdominal injury and he was forced to skip the ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals.
Cilic on Spain being without Nadal, Alcaraz
“Yeah, you know, it would be much different, because I would say, you know, both of them are — you know, Rafa, you know, has been during all his career, you know, a leader of the team and, you know, with his own results and always enjoyed this, like, team atmosphere. And, you know, playing singles, doubles, he’s one of the, if not the best, Davis Cup players ever, you know, in that sense. And then with Carlos, fantastic season for him. Such a pity for him to get injury at Paris-Bercy, not to be able to play also the Masters in Torino, and then also this one at home. So it’s very difficult for both of them. Yeah, but a lot to look ahead for Team Spain in the following years, for sure,” Cilic explained, as quoted on Sportskeeda.
Meanwhile, Croatia is now set to face Australia in the semifinal.
In 2018, Cilic led Croatia to the Davis Cup title.
Now, Cilic is determined to win his second Davis Cup title with Croatia.
