Mardy Fish praises Novak Djokovic for playing Davis Cup Finals

United States Davis Cup team captain Mardy Fish praised world No. 1 Novak Djokovic for his willingness to represent Serbia at the Davis Cup Finals.

Djokovic has had a long and exhausting season but that didn’t prevent him from making himself available to the Serbian team.

“Novak has shown that playing for his country matters to him. That’s great for Davis Cup. I see that Russia and Italy are coming in with pretty heavy teams. Clearly, the format change won’t tear guys away,” Fish said.

Former world No. 1 Jim Courier is happy to see Djokovic and world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev playing the Davis Cup Finals.

“This year probably feels longer than others because of all the bubbles the players endured, so it’s really impressive that so many guys are in. The fact that you have Djokovic and Medvedev is fantastic. If you count healthy players, you have plenty of star power,” Courier said.

Djokovic locked in on winning the title

Serbia will play its group stage ties behind the closed doors as they are playing in innsbruck.

“The bad news is that we are going to play in front of empty stands (in Innsbruck, due to Covid-19 restrictions in Austria), but Serbia is in our hearts; we know that we enjoy big support and we will try to bring joy to our people back home. The weeks I am representing Serbia are one of the most significant ones for me – ATP Cup and Davis Cup. I hope that we are going to be successful,” Djokovic said.

Djokovic is determined to lead Serbia to their second Davis Cup title.

“All of my attention is on the Davis Cup now. The end of the season is very late, but it is what it is. We want to go all the way: we have a team that is both young and experienced, and we have a doubles specialist in Nikola Cacic, which is very important in this format,” Djokovic said.
