Leylah Fernandez: “I have a lot to learn, I’m only 18 year-old”

Her main goal is to follow up on the great result obtained at the US Open 2021, the last Grand Slam tournament in this season, and continue to grow her game. Leylah Fernandez restarted with a victory in the WTA Tour, after the experience in New York ended in the final, against a never banal Alizé Cornet, defeated in two sets with a clear 6-2, 6-3.

The Canadian has been demonstrating in recent months her great potential, each time shown with expert tennis players and, at times, among the most formidable in the ranking. The 19-year-old girl needs to continue her adventure and obtain other significant positive results, to further climb the ranking.

In the post-match interview, also reported by Punto de Break, she focused on the difficulty of the confrontation due to the huge wind. She said: “It was a tough game. It is never easy to compete in these conditions, but I was able to pull off my best shots and bring the inertia of the match to my side.”

The Canadian thinks about the next round

Her feelings that she gave her this success: “Winning a race like this gave me a lot of confidence, beating an expert opponent like her in such an important tournament is always positive. The Frenchwoman has been on tour for a long time, she always fights for every point, we have trained together sometimes and even in training she is really tough.”

The Montreal native then added: “I still have a lot of things to learn, I’m only 19 year-old. The others are all older and with more experience than me. My grandfather and father always remind me that this doesn’t matter: this difference doesn’t have to be a disadvantage, the key is to work hard, stay in the moment and wait for your chance.”

Now a third round not easy with the top seed number 9 on the draw, the Russian Anastasija Pavlyuchenkova. Fernandez said: “She has a lot of personality on the pitch, so I expect a great battle in a few days.”
