Kevin Anderson receives wild card into Washington

South-African tnenis star Kevin Anderson has received a wild card into the Citi Open in Washington, the tournament announced. 

Anderson a former world No. 5 is set to make his eighth appearace on the hard courts of Washington. 

Anderson, now ranked at No. 74 in the world, made his last appearance at the Citi Open in 2017. 

Back then, Anderson made his first final at the event before losing to Alexander Zverev in the final. 

“We’re excited to welcome our 2017 runner-up, Kevin Anderson to the men’s field at the 2021 Citi Open as a wild card. Formerly ranked #5 in the world, Kevin is on a good streak having just won his 7th career title at the Tennis Hall of Fame Open,” the tournament announced. 

Anderson won Newport last week 

In Sunday’s final in Newport, Anderson beat rising American star Jenson Brooksby 7-6 (8) 6-4. 

Anderson, who finished runner-up at Wimbledon in 2018, captured his first title since 2019 with beating Brooksby in the Newport final. 

“It’s been a pretty tough run with some injuries. But to be back here at the International Tennis Hall of Fame with such history, this couldn’t be a better week for me to start, hopefully, my comeback,” Anderson said during the trophy ceremony. “I’m very motivated to get back. But it all starts with each match, and I was able to really grind it out.”

Anderson receved a wild card for Newport and he ended up winning it all at the tournament. 

“Thanks to the tournament for giving me a wild card. It definitely worked out for me,” Anderson said. “The last time I was here was in 2008. It’s significant in a way. I was just starting my career, and I guess I’m towards the end, but definitely [am] very motivated to keep going.”

The Citi Open in Washington is set to take place from August 02-08.
