Jessica Pegula shares her thoughts on Serena Williams-Emma Raducanu matchup

Top-ranked American tennis player Jessica Pegula feels Serena Williams versus Emma Raducanu will be a “nice popcorn match.”

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, is retiring after Cincinnati and the US Open.

In the Cincinnati first round, Williams plays 2021 US Open champion Raducanu.

“Serena’s kind of on her way out. And Emma’s already won a Slam, but still on her way in. And it will just be kind of cool to see the two of them out there. I’m sure it’s kind of cool for her, at least she gets to play Serena. Serena isn’t going to play after the US Open so that will be exciting,” Pegula said, per Sportskeeda.

Pegula: Williams versus Raducanu a nice popcorn match

Raducanu reached the Washington quarterfinal, before losing to Camila Giorgi in the Toronto first round this week.

On the other side, Williams kicked off her summer on hard courts this week.

Williams defeated Nuria Parrizas Diaz for her first victory in 2022, before losing to Belinda Bencic in her next match.

“That’s a nice popcorn match I guess for everyone. Serena hasn’t been playing that much. Emma at least got a little momentum in DC, lost a tough match to Giorgi here. It will be interesting,” Pegula added.

Williams is widely considered as one of the greatest and most impactful players in tennis history.

Pegula acknowledged Williams’ greatness and noted that her record speaks for itself.

“I think everyone’s in awe of what she’s done and it’s kind of sad, I guess, to see it sort of come to an end. But there’s not much else I can say. I think everything she’s done kind of speaks for itself,” she stated.

Williams lifted her first Grand Slam at the US Open in 1999.

Williams picking the US Open as the place where she wants to retire wasn’t really a surprise as the general belief was that the American would one day call it a career at Flushing Meadows.
