‘I can’t see Novak Djokovic failing to win the US Open’, says former star

There are only a few days left before the last Grand Slam event of the season begins and Novak Djokovic is ready for it. The world No. 1 has been practicing in Portonovi, Montenegro and will soon be heading to New York for the US Open. Djokovic missed a medal at the Tokyo Olympics and finished fourth. A heartbreaking defeat in the semifinals and a dismal performance in the bronze medal match resulted in an unfortunate end to his Olympic campaign. He now he will be eager to end the year with the Calendar Slam. The World No. 1 is about to complete a Calendar Slam in 2021. The year started with a Grand Slam victory for the Serb in Australia and he too will want to end it on his own terms. Djokovic is also about to create another record. After 20 Grand Slam titles, he will look to number 21 to surpass Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic will fancy his chances at the US Open

Novak Djokovic has a chance to make history at the US Open. Having triumphed at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon, the Serb is one step away from becoming the first man since Rod Laver to win all four Majors in a calendar year. According to Marion Bartoli, the prospect of taking sole ownership of the Grand Slam record will serve as added motivation for Djokovic. “He will try to win a 21st Grand Slam title and be the first to reach this level,” Bartoli said. “I think his motivation will be at its peak and he has the game to win on hard, he has proven it time and time again. To be honest, I can’t see him failing to win the US Open,” she added. In its fourth edition, Laver Cup will witness a European team without Federer, Djokovic and Nadal. Despite these absences, Team Europe looks strong with some really great players. Matteo Berrettini, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud0, Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev will be defending the title in Boston this year. Novak Djokovic will be missing his second consecutive Laver Cup tournament. He did not play in the 2019 campaign either due to political drama within the ATP. Rafael Nadal has been going through a rough patch in his career due to injury issues and hasn’t been the same player. He picked up a foot injury after this year’s French Open semifinal and recently withdrew from the North American circuit as well.
