Last 22 September, through a post published on her Instagram profile, Simona Halep announced the end of the sports collaboration with Darren Cahill. The Romanian champion, to restart stronger than before, decided to rely on Adrian Marcu, whom she already had as a coach in 2003.
During the brief spell, Halep was able to win the likes of New Haven, Moscow and Sofia. Halep is currently playing at the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells and on her first match she defeated Marta Kostyuk by a score of 7-6 (2), 6-1.
The former world number one could have faced Emma Raducanu in the round of 32, but the winner of the last edition of the US Open surprisingly lost in two sets in the second round.
Simona Halep comments on Emma Raducanu’s defeat
In the post match interview, Simona talked about Emma Raducanu and what she did in New York. She said: “It was a great game, even if the first set felt a little tougher due to the weeks I didn’t play.
I was a little nervous and she was playing excellent tennis, until things went much better in the second set: I started to feel more confident on the court. We haven’t been able to talk much about her, but I congratulated her on her incredible milestone in New York, what she did with her was incredible and I’m very happy for her.
She is very young, so everything she has done is even more incredible. Everything that she comes now will be a challenge. I would have liked to have played with her, with the latest US Open champion, but I’m sure there will be many opportunities in the future.”
On the change of manager, Halep finally added: “It was a decision we made together. After six years we thought it was time. Sometimes it’s not nice that a relationship lasts so long, neither for the player nor for the player trainer.”
