Garbine Muguruza, Simona Halep join already star-studded Charleston player field

World No. 3 Garbine Muguruza and former world No. 1 Simona Halep have both signed up to play Charleston in 2022, per Michal Samulski.

Muguruza, 28, is set to make her third appearance in Charleston.

Muguruza picked up a first round exit in Charleston in 2013, while she made the round-of-16 at the tournament this year.

On the other side, world No. 20 Halep is set to debut on the clay courts of Charleston.

Previously, Paula Badosa, Belinda Bencic, Leylah Fernandez, Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens confirmed their participation in Charleston.

Signing up Muguruza is huge for the Charleston organizers as the Spaniard won this year’s WTA Finals.

“I feel really happy, and also a little relieved, because at the beginning of the tournament I struggled to find a good game, but then I gradually managed to adapt. This one. victory means even more because it was achieved here in Latin America, and especially in Mexico, where the public has always supported me since the first time I came to play here, when I was an unknown player,” Muguruza said after winning the WTA Finals.

Muguruza thrilled with her 2021 season

“I truly believe this has been my best career season, even though I haven’t won slam tournaments. It was a season in which I managed to find continuity in the game, albeit with ups and downs in the result,” Muguruza claimed.

“The last few seasons have been mixed, but never because of my tennis: sometimes I may not be able to put all the pieces together, but my tennis is always there.

“Now I have managed to find a balance towards which I have worked a lot with my team: this victory shows us that work pays off and that we are following the right path. Slam tournaments are bigger, more famous, there is tradition.

But here at the Finals you know there are only the best, and if you win this tournament you can really say you are the best of the year.”
