Elena Rybakina makes honest admission after losing first match since Wimbledon win

Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina admitted she was very busy after Wimbledon and didn’t really have much time to prepare San Jose but still wanted to compete at the tournament and give her best. 

On Monday, Rybakina suffered a first round defeat at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose. . 

Daria Kasatkina, the seventh-seeded player in the San Jose main draw, recovered from a set down to beat Rybakina 1-6 6-2 6-0. 

Rybakina got off to a great start to her first post-Wimbledon victory match but Kasatkina stormed back to win in three sets. 

“It was a tough week after Wimbledon. I had a lot of things to do. I didn’t have enough time to prepare for the hard season. I wanted to come and try my best. I’m just happy that I’m here and I started my matches, so hopefully it will just be better and better,” Rybakina told WTA insider.

Rybakina loses in three sets to Kasatkina

Rybakina faced a break point in the opening game of the match but was able to save it and avoid going down by an early break.

The two players were tied to one game apeice after the opening two games, before Rybakina claimed back-to-back breaks and won the next five games to win the first set in impressive style.

Kasatkina bounced back at the start of the second set, breaking Rybakina twice for a very comfortable 5-1 lead.

Kasatkina failed to serve out for the second set in the seventh game, but broke Rybakina in the eighth game – when the Kazakh was serving to stay in the set.

After winning the second set, Kasatkina absolutely dominated Rybakina in the third set as she brok the Kazakh three times to complete her comeback victory.

Rybakina will be hoping to bounce back at the National Bank Open in Toronto, which kicks off next week. 

Rybakina lifted her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and it remains to be seen how far can she go at the US Open.
