Former world No. 3 David Ferrer acknowledged that the new generation is getting better every year but made it clear they cannot be compared with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
Nadal, Djokovic and Federer are widely considered as the three greatest tennis players in tennis history as each has 20 Majors in his collection.
Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev have managed to make a breakthrough at the Grand Slam level but the others haven’t so far.
“They’re improving every year. We cannot compare this generation with Rafa, Roger and Novak because that’s impossible. They’re the best three players in history,” Ferrer told Sky Sports.
Ferrer, Tomas Berdych, Mark Philippoussis speak on the new generation
Berdych, who retired in 2019, thinks we can expect more unpredictable results in men’s tennis going forward.
Nadal and Federer struggled with injuries in 2021, while Djokovic managed to stay healthy but suffered two major disappointments at the Tokyo Olympics and US Open.
“Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic have been around for a really, really long time and it shows just what a great generation of tennis it has been. We could now expect more unpredictable results,” Berdych said.
“I really like the way Stefanos Tsitsipas plays because he plays very aggressive and creative on court. The second half of his season has been a bit flat though.”
Meanwhile, former Australian tennis star Philippoussis named Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas as the three main men from the new generation.
“Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Tsitsipas are the main men. There are other guys too, but they’re not as consistent as the three mentioned,” Philippoussis explained.
“I’m excited with Tsitsipas most of all because I love his all-round game. I love his passion, just love the way he gives it all, and shows how much it means to him out on the court. He’s a beautiful mover and not scared to come to the net.”
