World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev said winning the Davis Cup feels amazing and added it was one of the best weeks of his career.
World No. 5 Andrey Rublev beat Borna Gojo in the opening rubber of the final between Russia and Croatia.
2021 US Open champion Medvedev didn’t fail to get the job done in the second rubber as he beat Marin Cilic 7-6 (7) 6-2 to secure the title for Russia.
Cilic saved two set points in the first set tie-break but couldn’t save the third as Medvedev won a tight opener.
After winning a tight first set, Medvedev dominated the second set as he broke Cilic twice to book a straight-set win.
“It feels amazing.” Medvedev said afterwards, as quoted on the Davis Cup Finals website. “But I’m more happy for the team than for myself. We have an amazing team, amazing atmosphere. I’m happy to be part of it and bring the points we need. It’s never easy to come here at the end of the season but they were some of the best weeks of my career.”
Medvedev had a message for the Madrid crowd
“Thank you, guys, very much for supporting me today,” Medvedev said.
A day earlier, Medvedev was booed while giving an on-court interview following his win over Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.
Medvedev hit back at the Spanish crowd, saying beating Spain in the group stage was the highlight.
“I’m really happy for the team to be in the final. Amazing two weeks so far for us. Beating Spain was the highlight, I think beating Spain in Madrid, for all of us in the locker room we so happy to beat the home favourites. It started in 2019 but I’m not going to be tired to say it. People still don’t understand how to make me lose, they should support me, so it’s ok guys, continue, and I’m going to just win,” Medvedev said on Saturday.
