Courmayeur Ladies Open: Clara Tauson, Alison Riske start off impressively

Clara Tauson opened her campaign at the Courmayeur Ladies Open with a win over Stefanie Voegele in the first round. The Dane, seeded fifth in the draw, needed 60 minutes to post a 6-2, 6-2 win over her Swiss opponent.

Tauson saved both break points she faced while converting four of the five break point chances, she had on Voegele’s serve. She finished the match with 58 points to Voegele’s 32. In the second round, Tauson will play Giulia Gatto-Monticone.

The Italian qualifier came through to the second round after winning a derby against compatriot and wildcard, Martina Caregaro. Gatto-Monticone won 6-4, 7-6(3) in an hour and 50 minutes.

Another Italian who advanced to the second round was Lucrezia Stefanini. Stefanini, who received a main draw wildcard, defeated Mandy Minella, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in two hours and 24 minutes. For a place in the quarter-finals, Stefanini will play another Italian, in either qualifier Martina di Giuseppe or seventh seed Jasmine Paolini.

Courmayeur Ladies Open: Italians have a mixed day

Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti, however, lost in the first round. Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova defeated Bronzetti 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 28 minutes in their first-round clash. In the second round, Kozlova will play fellow Ukrainian, Dayana Yastremska.

Seeded 10th in the draw, Yastremska won against Vitalia Diatchenko, 6-3, 6-1 in 64 minutes. The world no. 79 didn’t face any break point and went on to break the Russian’s serve four times. Yastremska finished the match with 65 points to Diatchenko’s 41.

In the Polish derby between lucky loser Urszula Radwanska and Magdalena Frech, the latter beat Radwanska 6-2, 6-4 to take her place in the second round. Frech needed an hour and 47 minutes to wrap up the match. Frech awaits either Kamilla Rakhimova or the ninth-seeded Ann Li next.

Sixth seed Alison Riske defeated Indian lucky loser, Ankita Raina in their first-round clash. Riske won 6-1, 6-1 in 61 minutes. She’ll play either Anna Kalinskaya or Martina Trevisan in the second round.

Spanish qualifier Aliona Bolsova defeated Su-Wei Hsieh in their round-of-32 clash to reach the second round of the Courmayeur Ladies Open. Bolsova won 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-4 in two hours and 13 minutes. German qualifier Stephanie Wagner or third seed Liudmila Samsonova will be her next opponent.
