Bianca Andreescu speaks extremely highly of Iga Swiatek ahead of Rome meeting

2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu says she admires Iga Swiatek and is looking forward to meeting the Pole for the first time on the WTA Tour. 

Andreescu, 21, and 20-year-old Andreescu will be clashing for the first time as pros when they meet in the Rome quarterfinal. 

Both Andreescu and Swiatek became Grand Slam champions at a very young age and Andreescu is happy to see her and Swiatek doing well in their first years on the WTA Tour. 

Swiatek has been absolutely dominant over the last three months as she has won last 25 matches and is bidding to win her fifth consecutive title in Rome. 

“She’s playing great tennis. I really admire her success. But I’m very excited to play her. I love the challenge,” Andreescu told WTA insider. 

“It’s really nice to see that we started in the juniors together and watching us both excel at the same time is awesome.”

Andreescu defeated Petra Martic to set up a Swiatek meeting

On Thursday, Andreescu saw off Croatian Martic 6-4 6-4 to reach the Rome quarterfinal. 

Andreescu faced a break point in the fourth game but saved to tie the set to four games apiece.

After saving a break point, Andreescu earned the first break of the match in the ninth game to open a 5-4 lead. 

In the following game, Andreescu saved two break points before realizing her first set point to win the first set. 

After winning the first set, Andreescu started the second set with an early break and a 2-1 lead. 

Down by a set and a break, Martic refused to quit and broke back Andreescu in the fourth game. 

After saving two break points in the sixth game, Andreescu broke Martic in the seventh game to open a 4-3 lead in the second set.

Andreescu then held on to her serve the rest of the match to complete a straight-set win. 

It remains to be seen if Andreescu can upset Swiatek and reach the Rome semifinal.
