Bianca Andreescu: I wanted to play Emma Raducanu and now I got my wish

Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu reveals she followed Emma Raducanu’s US Open run and she called the Briton “a really great player.”

Last year, Raducanu made tennis history when she became the first qualifier in tennis history to win a Grand Slam.

Raducanu came New York hoping to win three qualifying matches and make her main draw debut at Flushing Meadows but she by far exceeded her expectations.

In the end, Raducanu won a total of 10 matches – all in straight sets to win her first Grand Slam.

Andreescu, 21, also became a Grand Slam champion at the US Open as she made it all the way at the tournament in 2019.

“I watched her win the US Open, and I was really happy for her because I won it basically around her age,” Andreescu said, per the WTA Tour website. “Obviously she was playing a Canadian, so that was really nice too. She’s a really great player, so I’m expecting a really good match. I remember saying, ‘I want to play her,’ and it looks like I got my wish.”

Andreescu set to clash Raducanu in Rome

Andreescu and Raducanu are set to play each other for the first time at Foro italico in Rome.

Before Andreescu witnessed Raducanu’s US Open win, Raducanu followed Andreescu’s run to the 2019 US Open title.

“Yeah, I watched that tournament,” Raducanu said. “I thought Bianca was playing incredibly well. I think her physicality is one of her strengths, how good she is moving, how low she stays. I think that’s really cool. And probably something I can learn from myself.”

Andreescu just recently kicked off her 2022 season.

In 2021 December, Andreescu announced an indefinite break from tennis because she wanted to take some time to work on her well-being.

Andreescu is now back and hoping to achieve big results.
