Belinda Bencic shows big class after falling short to Ons Jabeur in Berlin final

Swiss tennis star Belinda Bencic refused to talk about herself or take anything away from Ons Jabeur after retiring the Berlin final as she said that the Tunisian definitely deserved the Berlin title.

In the Berlin final, Bencic was down by a set and a break when she decided to retire the match due to an ankle injury.

After Jabeur broke Bencic in the third game of the second set to open a 6-3 2-1, Bencic didn’t want to risk aggravating her ankle injury and retired the match.

“I won’t talk about myself, because I don’t want to take a moment that matters to you. You’ve earned this title, you’re playing the best tennis of your life and I hope you can continue to do so in the coming weeks,” Bencic told Jabeur during the on-court trophy presentation, per Mario Boccardi.

Bencic happy with her tournament

Even though Bencic didn’t win Berlin, she was glad with her campaign at the German capital.

In Berlin, Bencic won four matches in three sets to make the final.

Playing three very physically demanding matches left a toll on Bencic, who contracted an ankle injury.

I think [Jabeur] really deserves this title and she’s playing great tennis at the moment,” Bencic said, as quoted on the WTA website. “I played maybe one match too much. Four heavy three-setters maybe didn’t help my legs to be steady today. But I’m really happy with this tournament, I’m really happy with my level, and sometimes this happens. It’s kind of for sure a bittersweet moment.”

Bencic heads to Wimbledon with two tournaments played on grass.

In the opening week of the grass season, Bencic reached the ‘s-Hertogenbosch semifinal.

In the upcoming days, Bencic will get some rest and get a treatment on her ankle.

Reaching the Berlin final will certainly help Bencic’s confidence level as the Swiss will certainly be aiming to make a deep Wimbledon run.
