On Sunday, Daria Kasatkina reached the second round of the Bad Homburg Open with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Andrea Petkovic. Kasatkina, the tournament top seed, needed only 67 minutes to complete the match.
Kasatkina won 69% of her first-serve points to the German’s 38%. She also saved two of the three break points she faced while converting six break points on Petkovic’s serve.
In the second round, Kasatkina will play another German, wildcard Jule Niemeier. Neimeier won her opening-round match against Claire Liu, 6-2, 6-2 on Monday.
Bad Homburg Open: Former US Open champion ousted
Liu’s fellow American, Sloane Stephens also crashed out in the first round. British qualifier Katie Swan came from down a set to beat Stephens, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. In the second round, Swan will play either Bianca Andreescu or seventh seed Martina Trevisan.
Ninth seed Alize Cornet reached the round-of-16 on Monday with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Anna Kalinskaya in the first round. The Frenchwoman will play German wildcard Tatjana Maria. Maria got past Anastasia Potapova, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in their opener.
Lucia Bronzetti moved into the second round after her first-round opponent, Kaja Juvan retired mid-match. The Italian was leading 4-6, 7-5, 2-0 at the time. Bronzetti now awaits either qualifier Anastasia Gasanova or third seed Angelique Kerber next.
Belgium’s Greet Minnen also took her place in the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over lucky loser, Misaki Doi. Minnen will play a German in either wildcard Sabine Lisicki, or Tamara Korpatsch.
Lastly, Kamilla Rakhimova and Caroline Garcia set up a second-round clash against each other at the Bad Homburg Open. Rakhimova, who qualified for the main draw, upset eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova, 7-6(6), 6-4. Garcia won against Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
