Bianca Andreescu and Caroline Garcia will play the final of the Bad Homburg Open on Saturday. Earlier, on Friday, both players came through their respective semi-finals in a contrasting manner.
Andreescu received a walkover into the final after Simona Halep, who was to play the semi-final against her withdrew prior to their match with an injury to her neck. Sharing an update about her fitness condition, the third-seeded Romanian shared on social media, “I am sorry that I had to withdraw today before my semi-final match. But unfortunately, I woke up this morning with a blocked neck and this is not allowing me to perform to the best of my ability.”
Bad Homburg Open: Caroline Garcia bests Alize Cornet
On the other hand, Garcia beat ninth seed Alize Cornet in their French derby, 7-6(9), 3-6, 7-5 in two hours and 45 minutes.
Both Cornet and Garcia won high margin of first-serve points – Cornet won 75% while Garcia won 73%. In terms of second-serve points won, Cornet won 60% to Garcia’s 51%. The entirety of the match featured only five breaks of serve – all of which came in the latter two sets. Neither Cornet nor Garcia faced any break point in the first set.
Cornet had a couple of set points in the first set but she wasn’t able to capitalise on either. Garcia wasn’t able to convert on the first of her three set points but took the opener after clinching the fourth. In the second set, Cornet saved the only break point she faced while converting two breaks on her opponent’s serve. In the deciding set, Garcia first took the lead by breaking Cornet’s serve but the latter broke back and held her own up to the ninth game. In the 10th game, on Garcia’s serve, Cornet had a match point but wasn’t able to make good of it. In the following game, Garcia broke Cornet’s serve again and served out the match in the 12th game, on the first match point she brought up.
The Bad Homburg Open final between Bianca Andreescu and Caroline Garcia will be the first time the two players will be taking each other on.
