World no. 22 Cristian Garin scored his first ATP win of the season at home in Santiago, beating the fellow Chilean Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 6-2 in 68 minutes. The top seed lost 15 points in eight service games and fended off two break chances to mount the pressure on the other side of the court. A qualifier couldn’t follow that pace, dropping half of the points behind the initial shot and getting broken twice in each set to propel Garin over the top. Cristian held at love in game two after an ace and grabbed a break in the next one to forge the advantage. After two deuces, the top seed closed the sixth game and secured a break at love when Tabilo netted a backhand to move 5-2 up. Serving for the set, Cristian fired a service winner in game eight to close the encounter’s first part in style, hoping for more in set number two.
Alejandro sprayed a backhand error in the second set’s first game to fall behind, with Garin producing three comfortable holds to open a 4-2 gap. Garin earned another break a few minutes later and saved two break points in game eight before converting the second match point to sail into the last eight.
