Ajla Tomljanovic reached the third round at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, beating for the first time this season a player who occupies the top 10 of the WTA rankings. A beautiful victory for the Australian against the fearsome Spanish Garbine Muguruza, who had won the Chicago tournament last week and was among those credited to reach the final stages of the Californian competition.
The 28-year-old girl, currently engaged to Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini, was able to keep her mental focus after losing the second set, closing the match in favor of her in the decisive third set. A success that gives her a lot of confidence.
In the press conference after the match she said: “I came to this match with a lot of motivation, because she had beaten me in the last few precedents, even in hard-fought challenges.”
Ajla then added: “What gives me the most satisfaction is having well controlled those moments when you get nervous and you have to manage everything to be calm and focus on your task. In other defeats, against top players, I had my opportunities but I didn’t know how to exploit them.
I’ve always taken it as a lesson for the future. Here every day you have a new problem to solve. It makes me happy to have left all those past setbacks behind and to have done my best to react.”
Mentality is a fundamental aspect to be competitive: “Now that I’m a bit more veteran, I’ve learned to value everything more. Now I know that when I play well I’m prepared for anything.”
About her Her relationship with tennis: “I focus on enjoying every tournament, on being grateful to continue competing. It is my passion, it is a lifestyle, if I approach everything in this way I see that I enjoy it much more. Then there are the bad days, which are very heavy, but you can always learn from them and move on,” concluded Tomljanovic.
