Tuesday’s play at the Adelaide International featured two upsets in the form of eighth seed Elina Svitolina and fourth seed Paula Badosa.
In the first match of the day, Russia’s Anastasia Gasanova took down her higher-ranked opponent 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in their first-round clash in two hours and 35 minutes. Gasanova broke Svitolina seven times while saving four of the five break points she faced on her serve. In her on-court interview following her win, Gasanova said, “I was just working so hard every single day (in the off-season), and I was just giving everything.”
Gasanova will play Misaki Doi in the second round. Doi defeated Kristina Kucova 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in their round-of-32 match.
In the last match of the day, and in a rematch of their 2021 Indian Wells final, Victoria Azarenka upset Badosa in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 17 minutes to avenge her defeat to the Spaniard in that match. Azarenka lost serve twice but went on to break Badosa five times to keep herself ahead in the match.
In the second round, Azarenka will play Priscilla Hon who beat Petra Kvitova on Monday.
Adelaide International 1: Iga Swiatek, Sofia Kenin reach R2
Meanwhile, fifth seed Iga Swiatek and sixth seed Sofia Kenin moved safely into the second round. The Pole won against Australian qualifier, Daria Saville 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 19 minutes. For a place in the quarter-finals, Swiatek will play Leylah Fernandez.
Kenin also prevailed against a qualifier, Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti winning 7-5, 7-5 in an hour and 45 minutes. Ajla Tomljanovic, who won her opening round on Monday, will be Kenin’s next opponent.
Shelby Rogers won against qualifier Maddison Inglis of Australia, 6-1, 6-3 and will next play third seed, Maria Sakkari. Sakkari’s compatriot, qualifier Delphina Papamichail, however, crashed out in her opener against Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic. Bouzkova won 6-3, 6-0 and will play seventh seed Elena Rybakina in the round-of-16.
Lastly, Coco Gauff set up a second-round encounter against top seed Ashleigh Barty at the Adelaide International 1 after winning her opening-round match. The American defeated Norwegian qualifier, Ulrikke Eikeri 6-2, 6-1 in just 62 minutes.
