Actor Jon Bernthal suggested Serena and Venus Williams became so successful because they didn’t make their whole life revolve around tennis.
Bernthal played the role of coach Rick Macci on King Richard movie.
Macci was one of the first coaches to work with the Williams sisters.
“It wasn’t just tennis over everything for Venus and Serena Williams,” Bernthal said on an episode of The Rich Eisen Show podcast, as revealed on Sportskeeda. “It was “How is tennis going to serve you?” and not “How are you going to serve tennis?””
The Williams sisters had to have good grades and to go to the church.
“It was one of Richard Williams’ rules. There was no tennis unless the grades were perfect. You had to go to church. You had to do your tours,” Bernthal said. “That is why they are wildly talented and successful in their path.”
Serena Williams had nothing but good to say of Macci
Bernthal was recently asked about what do people say about Macci and he revealed Serena said it was so fun playing for Macci.
“Everybody who talked about Rick Macci, including Serena Williams, the first thing they said is, ‘It was among the funnest times in their lives. Just playing for Rick was fun,'” Bernthal said.
Recently, Macci declared Serena as the greatest tennis player of all time.
“To me it’s easy with [the women], you already know what I’m going to say,” Macci told Essentially Sports.
“I think if you just judge it on the accomplishments and with your eyes, I don’t think anybody is even close to Serena. “I just don’t even think it’s close. Nothing against anybody else, but she’s incredible.”
Meanwhile, both Serena and Williams are set to miss the Australian Open.
Serena announced her withdrawal from the Australian Open last month, while Venus pulled out a few days ago.
For the first time since the 1997 there will be no Williams sisters at the Australian Open.
